My Teaching Philosophy

About Me

My name is Allie Wilson. I am a student at the University of South Alabama, majoring in secondary education with a concentration in history. I am excited to graduate and move forward because I love history and I can't wait to teach it to children one day. I want to make learning fun for children and I want their environment in the classroom to be positive. I am looking forward to getting into the classroom and helping students succeed!

Teachers are Important

As a student you never realize how important teachers really are. Teaching was a job I thought I always wanted to be apart of but I now see that there is so much more to it than standing at the board and teaching subjects. As a teacher I want learning to be fun and I want my students to enjoy learning as much as I do. As a teacher I want all students to have equal opportunities and be allowed to reach their full potential. As a history teacher I will teach students about their past and that it is all important. I want to incorporate technology, projects, and most of all fun. History can be so boring and my hope is to help students see that it really can be interesting. Teaching is one of the most important jobs besides parenting. Most times teachers are with these children as much, and if not more, than their parents, and we have such a wonderful opportunity to make an impact. Teaching is a learning process for teachers too. If we are not learning and changing then we are doing our students no good.

Cultural in the Classroom

As a student in college, I learned just how many cultures are out there and how they influence education. As a history teacher, I think it is important to teach about different cultures. Students need to learn early that cultural is an important part of life. Teaching the differences in the world will make my students better. If they start learning about cultures before I did then maybe the world after high school will not be such a shock. There are so much to cultures that people are not aware of. I believe that teachers should be sensitive to different cultures and should teach that everyone is different and that is okay. I want to expose my students early to the differences in the world. I may just be a history teacher but using technology, news, and my experiences I can help make my students better people.

History and Today's News

As a history teacher news is very important. In class I will be teaching about the past. The past is very important for knowing why things are they way they are today. I want students to be actively involved in the news today. Some days, I will want to start classes by reading newspapers, websites, magazines, or whatever else I can get my hands on. As a student, I remember teachers starting off with the news of the day. I think that is vital in making students into better people. If they know what is going on in the world then they will be involved in the world. Many students never turn on the news and I want my students in my classes to know what is going on, if not for their own good, if for the good of others. History is important to learn about so we don't repeat the past. Learning today's news will help students connect what we are learning.

Google

I found Google while I was a college student. I think it is a great program. Google has so much to offer. One of the biggest things is Google docs. I like Google docs because it has word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and more. I like Google because it is a free program. Students are always in need of a free program since students come from all different walks of life. Google docs is easy and it is accessible anywhere. I will use google docs in my classroom for certain assignments because of the accessibility and ease of it. Google also has Gmail. A student can set up an account and get their e-mail anywhere. This also works hand in hand with google docs. Google also has a reader program where you can choose to keep up with whatever news you want. Anything from daily news to college football. Another great thing is the google calender. I like this because you can set up your calender to e-mail you when something is going on. I could set up a public calendar for assignments and students and their parents would have access to that from anywhere. Again, the best part is it is accessible everywhere you are. Google has so much to offer and it is growing everyday.

Projects/assignments

As a teacher I want to incorporate projects into my teaching. As a history teacher, projects can be fun. I know I always did posters or papers or other group projects. But in my classroom I think that role playing and other activities would be so much fun for students. There is so much history to be taught and there is so much students should learn. History can be boring but I want to make it fun. With projects I think history could be enjoyed by my students. All students learn differently and projects will make that easier. Projects alone let students be creative. Group projects allow students to work together and learn to work as a group. This also allows for students on different levels to participate and enjoy the project too. History is a great subject and students in my classes hopefully will feel the same way. Even small projects can have a huge influence on students. Interactive assignments are always changing and are a fun way for students to get the information. The internet allows for the interactive projects to be accessible at home so students can even relearn what we did in class.

Technology

As a teacher I think technology will play a huge part in teaching. As a secondary major I know that not only will most of my teaching involve technology but things students do as well will involve technology. There is so much technology out there that I want to make sure that students are exposed to everything. As a history major, I know there is so much out there to teach and these days technology makes that easy. Things from google to podcasts to simple word documents can all be useful in the classroom. As a history teacher, news will be important too. Using technology will be important in helping students to learn today's news. Technology is important in our lifestyle today and I will incorporate that into my teaching. The SMART boards allow even more technology to be used in the classroom. There is so much out there for teachers to use and it would be shame to just lecture to students. They enjoy technology and using it for educational purposes is a winner with both the teacher and the students.
